Tribal Leadership – Kokua.org’s Quest for Stage 5

Thank you so much to Deepti Singh for introducing us to the concept of Tribal Leadership by Dave Logan. Deepti is the head of talent management at American Savings Bank and she raved about this book. If you just want to get a quick intro, check out the video below.

This effort is about creating a stage 4 and 5 culture. This means that stage 3 people can either bump up to stage 4 due to the norms of the group or decide they don’t fit in. Once we have everyone at stage 4 we can move toward intermittent entry into stage 5. Both stages are very exciting. I’ve experienced stage 5 before in our businesses with my wife and it is invigorating and motivating. We are hoping to accomplish the same dynamic here.

One interesting point that Dave Logan makes in the Ted talk is how the ‘tribal leaders’ are brought together which is the model that we have been doing from the start but now has a buzzword and framework.

Thanks to Tony Hsieh at Zappos.com, the audiobook is free for download. It’s worth the time and you can put it on your phone or ipod and listen in the car.

Here’s a great video of the culture at Zappos.com.

Let’s go to stage 5! Who’s with me?
